While in the sun, why does your skin turn darker (tanner) but your hair turns lighter (blonder)?

UV rays can have a different effect on living and non living things.. if you see your couch that has been sitting in the sun, you'll see that its faded, but your skin is actually reacting to the sun either burning ( red ) or acclimatizing ( tanned )

While in the sun, why does your skin turn darker (tanner) but your hair turns lighter (blonder)?

Because your skin contains chemicals that react with sunlight to make it darker, and hair contains chemicals that react with sunlight to make it lighter.

Skin and hair aren't the same thing. It shouldn't come across as a surprise if they don't react the same way.

your skin is like fat meat the longer axposed to heat the browner it becomes. your hair is like grass the longer exposed the drier it becomes and turns color.

The melanin in your skin rises to the surface, creating a protective barrier to keep out harmful rays, is evidenced by the darkening of the skin. This is one of your body's natural defense mechanisms at work. Since your hair is, for all intents and purposes, dead matter, it does not have the same response. The sun actually bleaches, or fades, the color out of brown, or lighter, hair.
